Acclaimed director Steve McQueen has established an unparalleled reputation for powerful, unflinching films that embed themes of identity, social justice, and human endurance in meticulously crafted cinematic packages. Following last year’s documentary Occupied City, McQueen once again revisits WWII, this time in a sweeping odyssey that tracks a boy’s perilous journey to reunite with his mother amid the most dangerous days of the London Blitz. Working single mom Rita (Saoirse Ronan) reluctantly puts her son George (Elliott Heffernan) on a train bound for the countryside, where he’ll be safe from the looming threat of German air raids. But George has other ideas and makes a daring escape. Stranded outside the city, George must find his way back to London, encountering a cross-section of English society along the way. Meanwhile, Rita does everything in her power to locate her missing boy. In films like Hunger, 12 Years a Slave, and the Small Axe anthology, McQueen has demonstrated a unique skill for enlivening historical subject matter with a fresh, socially conscious edge. At once classical and revolutionary, Blitz employs traditional forms to bring a vibrant, multicultural 1940s Britain to life. It’s a dramatic staging ground for themes of class, immigration, and race that are no less resonant today.
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Elliott Heffernan, Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine
