In the year 1999 on an Earth-like planet, three high school best friends discover that a simple sneeze catapults them 20 years into the future. Shockingly, they find that their lives—and the world—have not turned out so great. De facto leader Wang Cheng Yong works for a nefarious criminal ring that the disheartened journalist Wang Zha is seeking to expose, while the once-husky Pao Pao gets a major glow-up only to learn the alarming news that he is dating Cheng Yong’s girlfriend Yi Yi. As the three come to terms with a future that sucks, they will have to combat a gauntlet of baddies with their out-of-this-world powers to save it (and maybe even grow up a little). Like a mad scientist experiment gone horribly right, Yang Li’s Escape from the 21st Century mixes the cerebral overload of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Daniels’ maximally absurd Everything Everywhere All at Once, with a large dash of Stephen Chow’s comedic martial arts mastery to create an unforgettable, heartfelt adventure set 3,000 light-years away.
