WIM WENDERS | FRANCE | 1984 | 147 MIN | ENGLISH | 4K
Forty years ago, the pairing of New German Cinema titan Wim Wenders (Perfect Days, PFF32) and quintessentially American playwright Sam Shepard yielded this meditative, indelible arthouse classic, which is presented in a gorgeous new 4K restoration. After missing for four years, Travis (Harry Dean Stanton), wanders out of the desert, nearly mute and seemingly amnesiac. Travis reconnects with his brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) and precocious young son Hunter (Hunter Carson), but the boy’s mother Jane (Nastassja Kinski) is no longer in the picture. Before long, Travis and Hunter set out for Houston to find her, culminating in one of the most haunting, perfectly staged reunions in cinema history. With its minimalist dialogue and evocative cinematography by frequent Wenders collaborator Robby Müller, Paris, Texas is one of the defining films of the 1980s. Overseen by the director, this newly restored and color graded digital presentation gives viewers the chance to view this classic in all its windswept, neon-soaked glory.
