GUY MADDIN, EVAN JOHNSON, GALEN JOHNSON | CANADA | 2024 | 103 MIN | ENGLISH
Surreal and stuffed with off-kilter humor and intoxicating visuals, the films of Canadian auteur Guy Maddin (My Winnipeg, PFF13’s The Saddest Music in the World) practically occupy a genre unto themselves. With Rumours, Maddin presents one of his funniest and most purely entertaining films yet, re-teaming with frequent collaborators Evan and Galen Johnson for an off-the-wall satire of international relations and political incompetence. At the annual G7 summit, the leaders of these seven wealthy nations assemble to write a hilariously hollow response to an unspecified global emergency. But when they find that they’ve been abandoned by their aides and other staff, they’re left to cope with the crisis on their own. Pathetically ill-equipped, these bumbling world leaders face an increasingly bizarre series of occurrences, from an army of zombie-like bog people to a giant brain in the middle of the woods. Bringing these absurd characters to life, Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and the rest of the ensemble cast deliver a farcical take on politicians too deluded to notice the world burning around them.
