Q&A with director Steve Pink to follow the screening of The Last Republican

STEVE PINK | USA | 2024 | 88 MIN | ENGLISH
The light-hearted ribbing between liberal filmmaker Steve Pink and staunchly conservative politician Adam Kinzinger (who is a big fan of Pink’s film Hot Tub Time Machine) anchors this entertaining yet deceptively weighty documentary portrait, in which the civil disagreement between director and subject acts as a hopeful counterweight to the herd-minded polarization plaguing the nation. Pink follows Kinzinger (then a congressional representative from Illinois) in the wake of his decision to speak out against Donald Trump’s role in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, watching as Kinzinger abruptly goes from one of many conservative voices condemning the insurrection to a political pariah within his own party. The film tracks Kinzinger throughout the final months of his term, as he steadfastly serves on the January 6th Committee while being shunned by his former colleagues, and while his staff and family receive death threats and abuse. A fascinating insider’s view of America’s turbulent recent political history, The Last Republican is a rueful but heartening reminder that some politicians are still willing to look beyond party lines in pursuit of what’s right.
