It’s 1997, and young movie lover Nasir (Adarsh Gourav) dreams of filmmaking glory. Unfortunately, the small city of Malegaon isn’t exactly a hotbed of cinephilia, and the crowds at Nasir’s floundering movie theater are more interested in Bollywood blockbusters than the Chaplin and Keaton classics he programs. After tasting some success by splicing together Keaton and Jackie Chan flicks, Nasir alights on a novel idea: to restage classic films on a small scale using actors and crews from his own community. Deciding to remake Ramesh Sippy’s adventure film Sholay, Nasir and his compatriots happen upon a unique brand of homespun greatness, and their unexpected triumph leads to even greater ambitions. But will Nasir and his friends’ bond be able to withstand their success? Set over a number of years, Superboys of Malegaon follows Nasir and his ragtag team as they experience both the thrills and disappointments of their newfound calling. It’s a rousing, hilarious, and moving ode to friendship, collaboration, and the undeniable magic of the movies.
