AFOLABI OLALEKAN | NIGERIA | 2024 | 83 MIN | ENGLISH, YORUBA, PIDGIN
The boycott of a start-up triggers a chain of events intertwining the worlds of individuals from radically different class enclaves and reshaping their lives. The three cofounders of the fledgling rideshare business are struggling to stay above water amid relentless encounters with corrupt police and stifling government regulations. This turmoil results in a working-class motorcyclist joining the ranks of the unemployed, placing his family in jeopardy and driving him into nefarious environments in a frantic bid for survival. Simultaneously, a tragedy unfolds and forces a doctor into an ethical bind in which he’s torn between obeying his higher-ups and honoring his commitment to the Hippocratic oath. As these interconnected narratives progress, the escalating tension of class conflict, state-sanctioned violence, and the desperate fight for survival culminate in a poignant, universe-altering conclusion. Afolab Olalekani’s striking feature directorial debut intricately examines the intersections of power and vulnerability, exposing the complexities of class hierarchies in contemporary Nigerian society.
