BASEL ADRA, HAMDAN BALLAL, YUVAL ABRAHAM, RACHEL SZOR | PALESTINE, NORWAY | 2024 | 95 MIN | ARABIC, HEBREW, ENGLISH
For much of his life, Palestinian activist Basel Adra has witnessed and documented the systematic dismantlement of his community in Masafer Yatta, in the occupied West Bank. For decades, Israeli forces have attempted to drive Palestinians from the area, frequently bulldozing family homes and arresting residents. In his effort to bring greater attention to the injustices taking place, Adra teams with Yuval Abraham, a young Israeli journalist dedicated to upholding the rights of Palestinians. The two develop an unlikely bond, yet are often made painfully aware of the insurmountable gap between them. Framed by the relationship between Adra and Abraham, No Other Land is a heart-wrenching and infuriating plea for humanity and courage in the face of cruelty and complacency. Winner of the Documentary Award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, it is one of the most vital films to have emerged since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas War, serving as a vital reminder of the painful history underlying the current catastrophe.
