Nnamdi Asomugha co-wrote, directed, and stars in this searing thriller about a Black family whose lives are turned upside down over the course of one anxiety-filled night by a home invasion and its aftermath. When we meet young husband and father Chris (Asomugha), his wife Alex (Aja Naomi King), and their two daughters, the family is settling into a new house in the suburbs, excited for the future ahead. But when Chris is awoken by strange noises in the middle of the night and goes downstairs to investigate, what he finds sets in motion a series of events that threaten to derail everything he’s strived for. Soon the home is swarmed by police officers, led by unyielding Detective Carlsen (Melissa Leo). As Carlsen casts her relentlessly suspicious eye on each member of the family, the potential consequences for Chris and his loved ones become terrifyingly clear. Set over the course of several impactful hours, The Knife viscerally and eloquently depicts the impossible position of Black Americans who must fear the very authorities meant to protect them.
