MATTHIAS GLASNER | GERMANY | 2024 | 185 MIN | GERMAN
Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Matthias Glasner’s much-lauded dramedy is an intimate epic delving into the twisted dynamics of a highly dysfunctional German family. When we meet 70-something Lissy Lunies (Corinna Harfouch), she’s nearly incapacitated by a host of illnesses, yet she’s more concerned with the worsening dementia of her husband Gerd (Hans-Uwe Bauer). Their adult son Tom (Lars Eidinger, PFF31’s White Noise) is preoccupied with his own tumultuous personal and professional dilemmas, while his younger sister Ellen (Lilith Stangenberg) is engaged in a self-destructive spiral of her own. When Gerd’s health takes a sudden turn for the worse, the estranged family members are forced to convene, gradually confronting the buried resentments and hostilities that have driven them apart. Deftly melding squirm-inducing black comedy and gut-wrenching pathos, Glasner and his expert cast have created a novelistically detailed exploration of family, mortality, and creation.
Cast: Lars Eidinger, Corinna Harfouch, Lilith Stangenberg, Ronald Zehrfeld
