In 2018, under the guise of a “zero tolerance” policy on illegal immigration, federal authorities began removing children from parents with whom they’d crossed into the United States, leading to thousands of families being broken apart with little or no recourse to reunite. Based on the book by NBC News correspondent Jacob Soboroff, Separated features eye-opening testimonies from officials and bureaucrats tasked with carrying out this horrifying protocol. These interviews are intercut with narrative sequences that track the plight of one representative family and eloquently demonstrate the emotional brutality at the heart of the situation. With hundreds of families still separated years later and Donald Trump campaigning on a platform that proudly dehumanizes immigrants, Morris’ urgent new film is a distressingly timely yet vital reminder of the brazen cruelty possible when hateful, xenophobic authorities come to power.
