JOHN HSU | TAIWAN | 2024 | 110 MIN | CHINESE
There’s no business like ghost business. Four years after being betrayed and upstaged by her protégé, once-glamorous hotel ghost Catherine (Sandrine Pinna) has become a bitter, washed-up, no-name spirit. Catherine’s business-savvy, pop-idol-turned-ghost agent Makoto (Bo-lin Chen) sees a chance for the diva’s comeback when he witnesses the raw talent of a newbie ghost known as the Rookie (Gingle Wang). The three become determined not only to keep their haunting credentials firmly in active status (lest they cease to exist), but also stage the greatest frights the world has ever seen. Taiwanese filmmaker John Hsu (Detention, PFF29) shows the great lengths to which one goes to stay relevant with or without a pulse in his macabre satire filled with freakishly fun production design. For more than 25 years, East Asian cinema has been a source of pure nightmare fuel. Hsu gleefully plays with the iconic imagery from some of those most beloved works to create a classic new entry to keep us up at night.
