KARAN KANDHARI | UK, INDIA, SWEDEN | 2024 | 110 MIN | HINDI
Starting on night one of her arranged marriage, Uma (Radhika Apte) is thrown headfirst into the hellish prison of coupledom with her new husband Gopal (Ashok Pathak), a spineless, neglectful partner who struggles to even take off his shirt in front of his wife. Uma tries to adjust to her new life under the prying eyes of her gossipy neighbors, but the more she begins to see the pattern fated for her, the more she falls into a vortex of frustration and resentment. Looking for a release, she prowls the streets in hopes of filling the profound emptiness growing inside of her. As Uma continues to embrace her animalistic tendencies, her reality chaotically slides off the rails, leaving her unable to distinguish right from wrong. Sister Midnight is punk rock filmmaking at its finest, populated with pitch-black humor and brimming with anarchistic, cinematic surprises. Anchored with a deadpan ferocity by a striking performance from seasoned actor Apte, director Karan Kandhari’s brutal, fierce, and hilarious feminist allegory tells the story of a woman who goes to great lengths to take her life back.
