WALTER SALLES | BRAZIL, FRANCE | 2024 | 136 MIN | PORTUGUESE
Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) returns to his native Brazil for the first time in 16 years with this story of a woman fighting for those victimized by the military dictatorship after her husband’s disappearance. At the outset of I’m Still Here, life for the Paiva family—presided over by Eunice (Fernanda Torres) and her husband, former congressman Rubens (Selton Mello)—is content, despite the tumultuous political environment of 1970s Brazil. But when Rubens is abruptly abducted by the authorities, Eunice and her children’s lives are thrown into turmoil. Eunice herself is held in captivity for 12 days, pressured to divulge information about those in her circle. When she’s released, she’s endowed with a steely new determination to find out what happened to her husband and expose the injustices committed by the regime. Based on the true story of a family Salles was close to in his youth, I’m Still Here employs this deeply personal story to illuminate the painful history of Brazil during the brutal years of its military dictatorship.
