ANDREA ARNOLD | UK, USA, FRANCE, GERMANY | 2024 | 119 MIN | ENGLISH
In the stunning new film from auteur Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, American Honey),12-year-old Bailey (captivating newcomer Nykiya Adams) spends her days aimless and frustrated, wandering the clashing urban and rural landscape of North Kent, England. Living in a squat house with her endearing but erratic dad, Bug (Barry Keoghan, PFF32’s Saltburn), and half brother, Bailey yearns for connection. She must also do what she can to protect her three other siblings, living under the thumb of their mother’s abusive boyfriend. Along comes Bird (Franz Rogowski, PFF27’s Transit): an ethereal, enigmatic stranger, with whom Bailey forms a deep connection that may just lead to her salvation. Known for her unforgiving portrait of working class struggle, Arnold does not hold back with Bird, a truly singular work and career standout. Equal parts gritty and uplifting, the film takes flight into the realm of magical realism, while steadfastly remaining rooted in an unflinching reality.
