PEDRO ALMODÓVAR | SPAIN | 2024 | 106 MIN | ENGLISH
With his first English-language feature, Pedro Almodóvar combines the captivating star power of Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton for an exquisite exploration of devotion, regret, and mortality. Based on a novel by Sigrid Nunez, The Room Next Door finds well-known author Ingrid (Moore) back in her former stomping grounds of New York City. When she learns that her old friend Martha (Swinton) is seriously ill, Ingrid decides to pay her a visit. Despite the years apart, Ingrid and Martha quickly regain their closeness, swapping stories about a shared former flame (John Turturro) and reminiscing about their colorful pasts. But Martha also has weightier things on her mind; convinced that her cancer treatments will not save her life, Martha is consumed by regrets and thoughts of her own mortality. Soon, she’s enlisted Ingrid in a plan that will put their closeness to the ultimate test. Movingly portraying two women on either side of a delicate moral quandary, Swinton and Moore fit effortlessly into Almodóvar’s distinctive cinematic vision.
