From veteran documentarian Dawn Porter (John Lewis: Good Trouble), this spirited, poignant portrait of R&B legend Luther Vandross is a stirring tribute to the musician’s singular talent and artistry, as well as a revealing look at the complex man behind the velvety voice. From his auspicious beginnings at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, to a fateful stint as David Bowie’s background singer, to a storied solo career as one of the most popular R&B artists of the ’80s and ’90s, Luther: Never Too Much takes viewers on a journey through all of Vandross’ professional highs, as well as the setbacks he met along the way. Despite his success, Vandross had to fight for his place in a music industry determined to pigeonhole him. And while his songs were full of romantic passion, he often struggled to find fulfillment in his private life. Through electrifying archival footage and reminiscences from friends and collaborators, Porter has crafted a sensitive, emotional celebration of Vandross’ life and work.
