Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her new husband, Lee (Will Poulter) are beginning a bright new life in nineteen-fiftees California. Their domestic dream is complicated when Lee's charismatic brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi) returns from the Korean War. Lee is keen for the three to build a new life together, but Julius instead travels to Las Vegas, where he falls for a casino worker named Henry. Muriel embarks on a secret life of her own back in California, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible after meeting her new neighbor, Sandra.
