RIAN JOHNSON | UNITED STATES | 2025 | 144 MIN | ENGLISH
In 2019, Rian Johnson revitalized the murder mystery genre with the acclaimed Knives Out, introducing the world to an instantly classic detective in Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc. In 2022, he opened up Blanc’s world further with Glass Onion, taking us to sunsoaked beaches for a steamy weekend getaway mystery that skewered tech bro billionaires. Now we find ourselves inside the parish of a close-knit community who literally worship at the altar of their Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), an equally charismatic and tyrannical figure who holds his congregation in check with the word of the Lord. When an eager young ex-boxer turned cleric, Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor), comes to town, eager to make change for the better, Wicks’s manicured web of control begins to unravel. To tell too much here would spoil the surprises ahead, but suffice to say there is a murder and Benoit Blanc will certainly be on the case. Infused with the gothic dread of Edgar Allan Poe and horror tinges of A Haunting in Venice, Johnson’s third Blanc outing is packed with chills and pathos, making it what might just be his best one yet. Rounding out the stacked cast are top-notch performances from Glenn Close, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Jeremy Renner, Daryl McCormack, and Mila Kunis, all with their memorable roles to play and hilarious one-liners to deliver. Drawing from the principles of John Dickson Carr’s locked-room mysteries, this case is one that it will literally take a miracle for Blanc to solve.
