TSUI HARK | HONG KONG | 1986 | 104 MIN | CANTONESE
Director Tsui Hark is no stranger to playing with genres. His producing work alone covers vast ground with classics like A Better Tomorrow III and A Chinese Ghost Story. But it’s as an action director that he really thrives, applying a playfulness and a true love of the golden age of cinema to everything he touches. With Peking Opera Blues, he takes us back to the mid-1920s, a period of political turmoil in Peking where warlords battled one another for control. When a wandering minstrel, a greedy courtesan, and the daughter of a general get mixed up in a political plot to put China in debt by securing power through foreign loans, a comedy of mishaps ensues involving gangsters, martial arts, and, of course, forbidden love. Theatrical, propulsive, and as kick-ass as it is endlessly stylish, this influential genre-blend remains to this day an incredible night at the movies.
