JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor) is a disheveled and out-of-work carpenter, spending his days taking trips to the local art museum with his two sons. After successfully pulling off a few low-stakes robberies, JB is ready to attempt a large-scale heist. Roping in a few of his buddies, he sets a haphazard plan in motion that will put everything he has on the line. Following in the footsteps of hapless caper movies like Bottle Rocket and The Hot Rock, Reichardt’s latest is a hilarious homage to arrogance and a subversive dissection of privilege. Featuring a pitch-perfect all star cast that include Alana Haim, Hope Davis, Bill Camp, John Magaro and Gabby Hoffman, The Mastermind is a quietly thrilling and deliciously wry masterful gem from one of American cinema’s greatest working directors.
