JAFAR PANAHI | IRAN, FRANCE, LUXEMBOURG | 2025 | 105 MIN | PERSIAN

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been detained for his works, placed in and out of house arrest, and banned by the Iranian government from producing films since 2010. It is this firsthand experience that pervades Panahi’s resounding Palme d’Or winner, It Was Just an Accident. Late one night during a drive with his family, Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi) accidentally hits a dog, leaving his car incapacitated. Thankfully, a nearby garage owned by Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) is open, and the mechanic can help. But all pleasantries disappear when Vahid is triggered by the squeaking sound of Eghbal’s prosthetic leg. Soon, this seemingly innocuous squeak sets off a string of events that will engulf Vahid’s existence and envelop those around him. Panahi’s latest release marks a triumphant return to a more classically composed film, following a series of ingenious, often covert works that circumvented and outright disobeyed Iranian authorities while exploring the documentary versus narrative form. Dancing on the tightrope of various tones and emotions, this often funny, frequently tragic, tense drama utilizes everything in Panahi’s power to tell a knowing tale about the long-lasting echoes of trauma and the tenuousness of memory. Following in the footsteps of great genre-bending Palme d’Or winners before it, like Parasite and Oldboy, It Was Just an Accident is a different kind of comedy of errors filled with sordid accounts of despair and distrust that will resonate long after the credits roll.
