The hometown of acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho — Recife, Brazil — has been the connective tissue through his diverse and idiosyncratic works like Aquarius and Pictures of Ghosts. In his latest award-winner from Cannes, teacher-on-the-lam Armando (endlessly charismatic Wagner Moura) returns to the coastal city in 1977 during the festive carnival celebrations. He is welcomed by other political refugees and their matriarch leader Dona Sebastiana (Tânia Maria). When a human leg is discovered in a shark’s stomach, it ignites a lethal series of events that involves Armando, corrupt officials, hitmen, and even local urban legends. With the likes of 2024’s Academy Award-winning I’m Still Here, and now The Secret Agent, Brazilian filmmakers have just begun to explore the generational impact of the chaotic and deadly 20 years under military dictatorship. The diverse and eclectic supportive community at the heart of Mendonça Filho’s sublime new film presents hope — and possibly even the key — to overcoming Brazil’s present day struggle for unity and peace in the promising aftermath of Bolsonaro’s political defeat.
