SIMÓN MESA SOTO | COLOMBIA | 2025 | 123 MIN | SPANISH
Decades after a mildly successful poetry career, Oscar (unbelievable first-timer Ubeimar Rios) has decided it’s time for a change. If only the hubris-stricken “tortured artist” could hold down a steady job or stop himself from passing out on the curb after an all-too-common night of drinking. After his latest bout of wallowing in self-pity and being forcibly removed from the local poet’s forum, Oscar experiences an a-ha moment when he decides his new calling is to become an inspiration to the next generation of poets. No one shares his vision. Mainly to avoid his nagging sister and guilt over his absentee parenting, Oscar begins teaching at the local school. There, he discovers a student’s notebook filled with raw, poetic musings of an introverted young woman. With a clear ticket out of mediocrity, Oscar sets out to mold her into the next poet laureate, or at least pilfer a few ideas for himself. Soto’s second film is a fully realized, cringeworthy comedy with a heart, shot on warm and grainy 16mm. Winner of Cannes Un Certain Regard award, A Poet is one of the best international comedies to come out in ages.
