Balancing school, her Islamic studies, and a boyfriend, Fatima (Nadia Melliti) seems to her French-Algerian parents to be living a respectable life. But she is harboring a secret. Her awkward romantic encounters with her partner make it clearer as time goes on that Fatima has no interest in boys. She begins to experiment with her sexuality through dating apps and gets an electrifying look at a world so different from the one she has lived in. Once she heads off to university, Fatima gets more comfortable and begins leaning into a more sexually charged lifestyle, while still trying to maintain appearances back at home with her loving, devout family. It isn’t until she has a chance meeting with Ji-Na (Park Ji-min, PFF 31’s Return to Seoul), a nurse in her twenties, that Fatima realizes she can no longer go on living a double life. Adapting Fatima Daas’s autobiographical 2020 novel The Last One, director Hafsia Herzi (PFF28’s You Deserve a Lover), expertly crafts this moving, lived-in, sexy coming-of-age drama that beautifully examines Fatima’s struggle to embrace her true identity amid a reckoning with the oppressive culture she came from.
