IAN KIMBLE | UNITED STATES | 2025 | 87 MIN | ENGLISH
Cinema has gifted audiences with many iconic women duos over the years. Cher and Dionne. Romy and Michele. Barb and Star. Their irresistible devotion to each other, near-psychic connection, and idiosyncratic personalities and vocabularies have endured even when their fashion may fade — and inevitably return as retro. In Ian Kimble’s debut feature film Dead Giveaway, cinema lovers all over the world now have a new BFF duo to aspire to: Jill and Lia. When Jill (Ruby Modine) wakes up in a hangover haze next to a fully clothed — but extra bloody and dead — body, her first move is to call not the police, but her fast-talking galpal Lia (Mikaela Hoover) for help. Even dismemberment is not off the menu as the two try to hatch a bulletproof plan to get rid of the body under the suspicious watch of Jill’s roommate Sarah (Suzann Toni Petrongolo). As their drunken escapades from the night before slowly return to them, they will have to suss out a whole cadre of suspects behind the dead John Doe, lest they no-show for their brunch plans. With an endlessly creative and uproarious script by Kimble, Modine and Hoover’s undeniable chemistry light up the screen and will keep you laughing and shrieking until the very end.
