Set in a stately English manor in the 1950s is this reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic heroine as a dazzling hostess whose charm conceals a simmering restlessness. Married to George Tesman, a man vying for a coveted academic position, Hedda throws an extravagant ball where her influence is on full display. Yet beneath the surface of cocktails and candlelight, rivalries and desires collide. George’s competitor arrives in the form of Eileen, Hedda’s former lover, and her presence ignites tensions that spiral across the evening. Old intimacies resurface, loyalties shift, and Hedda’s carefully orchestrated control begins to dissolve into games of sabotage, seduction, and betrayal. Director Nia DaCosta transforms Ibsen’s 19th-century stage play into a subversive period piece, rife with the sharp wit of black comedy and the decadent energy of upper-class melodrama. With Tessa Thompson in the commanding central role, this adaptation becomes both a glittering spectacle and an exploration of desire, power, and the impossible expectation of containment.
