NICHOLAS HYTNER | UNITED KINGDOM | 2025 | 113 MIN | ENGLISH
Set in 1916, The Choral finds a small Yorkshire mill town reeling after the loss of most of its young male population. With its director and most of its singers off to the warfront, the local choral society is forced to recruit from a motley assortment of the village’s remaining residents. The choral committee also opts to hire a talented conductor with a somewhat checkered past, Dr. Henry Guthrie (Fiennes). Though his unconventional manner sometimes brings him into confrontation with his new charges, Guthrie soon helps the choir — and the rest of the village — put aside their differences and channel their hopes and fears into transcendent, beautiful music. Featuring an astoundingly talented cast of seasoned character actors and newcomers, The Choral underscores the importance of unity and the role of art in uplifting the spirit during troubled times.
