SHIH-CHING TSOU | TAIWAN, FRANCE, UNITED STATES, UNITED KINGDOM | 2025 | 109 MIN | MANDARIN, TAWAIIANESE
A mother and her two daughters move back to Taipei from the countryside to open a stall at the night market. As they navigate the ups and downs of daily life, 5-year-old I-Jing (Nina Ye), who is left-handed, becomes determined not to use what her traditional grandfather calls her “devil hand,” while her older, rebellious sister Ann struggles with the fallout from sleeping with an irresponsible local. This intergenerational drama draws from director Shih-Ching Tsou’s own life, exploring how fragile family ties can be in a culture pulled between old customs and modern sensibilities. Anchored by a scene-stealing performance from Ye, Tsou’s first solo feature feels both deeply personal and widely relatable, handling themes of inherited pain and financial strain with wit, compassion, and clear-eyed honesty. Taipei through her lens is dazzling yet suffocating, always bursting with energy within her naturalistic aesthetic. The film moves gracefully between heartbreak and play, infused with a solid dose of almost screwball-like comedy. Co-written, edited and produced by Tsou’s longtime collaborator Sean Baker, Left-Handed Girl is a high energy adventure of daily life decisions and an ode to the power of family.
