How the Canadian longtime collaborators skirt and swerve around them in the riotously funny Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a master class in vision, execution, and the tricky art of pop culture meta-comedy. Written by and starring the pair as fictionalized versions of themselves, this lo-fi, high concept stealth marvel opens on Matt (Johnson, also director) and Jay (McCarrol), two wannabe musicians circa 2008 with plenty of failed stabs at stardom between them and one shared dream: landing a gig at the Rivoli, a local Toronto bar. Fast-forward nearly two decades later, and those plans still haven’t come to fruition, though the manically effusive Matt is still chasing the perfect (and perfectly ridiculous) publicity stunt that will get them there. What happens next is best left unspoiled; suffice to say that following the success of Johnson’s 2023 film BlackBerry, he and McCarrol return with aplomb to their beloved cult characters, making the most out of the Toronto cityscape, shooting mockumentary-style, and capturing stranger-than-fiction moments of inspired improvisation that bring the real world, and real strangers, crashing into their parodic orbit. Remarkable visual effects and a trove of archival material only enhance the magic trick. Made for veteran fans of the show and newcomers alike, Nirvanna is an irreverent ode to art-making and friendship that trusts that wherever these guys are going, they don’t need rules.
