Open flames, copious nudity, and an antagonistic sonic assault of noise were par for the course for any Butthole Surfers concert during their acid-tinged rise in the ranks of rock and roll legends of the ’80s. Founded by the towering leader Gibby Haynes and punk guitarist Paul Leary at San Antonio’s Trinity College, the Buttholes were cut from the same psychedelic tapestry as proto-punks The Velvet Underground and filmmaker Tom Stern was there to capture it all. Through a treasure trove of live footage and backstage antics, Stern constructs a revealing portrait of a band looking to push the boundaries of decency in the name of art and Texas. Stern uses animation and puppetry to dramatize the passed-down lore of some of the Buttholes’ most significant achievements, including pissing off fellow tourmates and the media. Yet, at the heart of it all, is the unbound love and camaraderie that remains among Haynes, Leary, and dual drummers King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa — immortalized forever in the poster of Linklater’s debut Slacker.
