LEOS CARAX | FRANCE | 1991 | 125 MIN | FRENCH
After more than thirty years, Leos Carax’s delirious masterpiece still astounds with expressionistic visual flair as two unlikely souls collide in a romantic flurry. Fresh off a breakup and suffering from deteriorating vision, unhoused painter Michèle (Juliette Binoche) is drawn to the primal fire-breathing acrobatics of alcoholic street performer Alex (Leos Carax’s muse Denis Levant). The two quickly begin a passionate relationship that is only heightened by their current squalid living situation atop the temporarily closed Pont Neuf, a Paris bridge. Despite their volatile existence, Alex finds pride and purpose when Michèle’s vision forces him to be her trusted eyes. Yet he must deceive his new love when Michèle’s estranged family plasters both sides of the Seine with missing person posters begging their daughter to come home. Promises of a restorative eye surgery threaten the unusual home they have made together. Capped by a bombastic, applause-worthy sequence during the City of Light’s Bastille Day, this new, highly anticipated 4K restoration of a bona fide classic is Carax at his most exuberant and liberated in his quest to create pure cinema.
