BRENDAN CANTY | IRELAND, UNITED KINGDOM | 2025 | 95 MIN | ENGLISH
Kicked out of his foster home, Christy is a teenager with no choice but to move to Cork’s Northside with his elder brother, a man already burdened with the responsibilities of building a stable life for his wife and young child. What begins as a temporary arrangement soon leads to more complicated territory as Christy reconnects with his community, forges new friendships, and glimpses possibilities for a future he never imagined, even as his brother struggles to shield him from destructive influences. Director Brendan Canty strikes a deft balance between grit and sentimentality, capturing both the resilience and humor of working-class life. Winner of the Grand Prix in the Berlinale’s Generation 14plus competition, Canty’s debut feature resists cliché and caricature, grounded in the masterful lead performance of Danny Power as the eponymous Christy. Thus emerges a deeply human coming-of-age portrait of second chances, fragile bonds, and the struggle to rebuild when the very structures meant to protect you have already failed.
