SEBASTIÁN LELIO | CHILE | 2025 | 129 MIN | SPANISH
Chilean director Sebastián Lelio’s first Spanish-language feature since his triumphant Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman is a marvel to behold. Inspired by the real-life “Feminist May” protests that swept a Chilean university in 2018, Lelio energetically captures the unwavering fortitude and euphoria that engulf a sea of united women and non-binary students on a crusade to end their silencing. When synchronized protests erupt around her in the university’s square, vocal student Julia (Daniela López) is caught by surprise. She’s still mulling over her confusion about the hazy night before and her most recent in a string of hookups with her teaching assistant, Max (Lucas Sáez Collins). She can’t shake the feeling that a line was crossed. When she discloses her uncertainty to others, she quickly becomes the beating heart and de facto voice of the cause. With a crucial scholarship on the line, Julia must decide between her education and the opportunity to end the silent suffering. Newcomer López is an undeniable force to be reckoned with and is flanked by a tidal wave of remarkable talent as Lelio outdoes himself with each exhilarating set piece.
