Curtis Mayfield’s soaring falsetto and fearless songwriting reshaped American music. From his groundbreaking work with the Impressions to his era-defining solo records and unforgettable Super Fly soundtrack, he gave voice to joy, resistance, and hope. In her directorial debut, H.E.R. crafts an intimate tribute to Mayfield, whose music she first learned as a child and still draws inspiration from today. In studios and rehearsal rooms, she joins artists including Maxwell, Mary J. Blige, Tom Morello, John Legend, Stephen Marley, and Ernie Isley to reflect on how Mayfield’s music shaped their lives and continues to ripple through their own work. Together they revisit iconic tracks, unpack arrangements, and connect the music to cultural moments past and present. Archival footage and rare reflections enrich the portrait, highlighting Mayfield’s pioneering role in founding one of the first Black-owned record labels, his influence on Bob Marley, and his reputation as the “Gentle Genius” who never lost his optimism even while writing searing protest music. Overflowing with music, memory, and reverence, this documentary gives Mayfield his long-overdue flowers.
