MICHEL FRANCO | UNITED STATES, MEXICO | 2025 | 95 MIN | ENGLISH, SPANISH
By now, we know that director Michel Franco is not messing around. His patented stark style of filmmaking has been used to sharply examine some of our world’s toughest cruelties. A frequent alum of the Philadelphia Film Festival, his masterworks like After Lucia, April’s Daughter and Sundown acutely examine tough subject matter with a nakedly honest reality. His latest work is no exception. Collaborating for the first time with a searing Jessica Chastain, Dreams tells the story of a sultry love affair between Jennifer, a wealthy socialite, and Fernando, a Mexican ballet dancer to whom she acts as a secret benefactor. Brimming with talent, Fernando is on the cusp of making a name for himself on the international stage. But when their secrets come dangerously close to threatening Jennifer’s social status, tensions brew within the couple, putting them on a speed path toward destruction. Raw, brutal, and incredibly timely, Franco tackles the current immigration debate head on with a merciless tale of class, control, and privilege that will shake you to your core.
