MASCHA SCHILINSKI | GERMANY | 2025 | 149 MIN | GERMAN
Cannes Jury Prize-winner Sound of Falling is one of the most unique, yet indescribable cinematic experiences of the year. In only her second film, co-writer/director Mascha Schilinski exudes confidence and patience as she slowly reveals the lives of four very different young women who’ve all resided in an old farmhouse in northeast Germany at some point. At the turn of the 20th century, the youngest, Alma, obsesses over the macabre picture of a dead girl that eerily resembles herself. Decades apart, Erika and Angelika experience their first, complicated sexual awakening. Finally, Lenka connects with a peculiar teen neighbor who just lost her mother. Over 100 years exist between our protagonists. Despite no overt story connection, Schilinski utilizes visual cues, compositions, and sounds to connect their individual plights. It creates an excellent, if not tumultuous, shared experience that continues to expand in scope as the film unfolds. Gorgeous cinematography and a vast, experimental sound design only add to the experience of not only four young women coming of age, but also a director coming into their own. Don’t miss.
