SARAH GOHER | EGYPT | 2025 | 95 MIN | ARABIC
In Cairo, Toha works as a domestic maid in a wealthy household. At 8 years of age, her days are filled with chores and quiet observation of lives more privileged than her own. Nelly, the daughter of her employer and Toha’s best friend, has a birthday on the horizon, which becomes a beacon of excitement for the two young girls. Toha seizes the occasion, deciding to orchestrate a celebration she has always dreamed of for herself. As the party-planning commences, she develops a closer but complicated bond with Nelly’s mother. Within Toha’s determination to create a memorable event, a stark contrast emerges between the two childhoods: one defined by labor and the other by comfort. Despite the heart-wrenching realizations of class divisions, the possibility of joy still thrives. Sarah Goher's Tribeca award-winning feature debut unfolds with simplicity and precision, reflecting how childhood desire for connection persists even within structures of inequality, and how celebration itself can become a form of resistance.
