Her powerful lyrics cut through bright lights and a charged crowd as Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo takes the stage, opening a story that moves between music, memory, and imagination. A rapper, producer, and Ph.D. candidate, Enongo transforms her lived experiences into art, weaving themes of mental health, family expectation, and self-definition into lyrics that resonate far beyond the stage. This deeply personal documentary mirrors her creativity with a hybrid form, combining vérité moments and electrifying performances with animation sequences brought to life by an all-Black-women team of animators. The interplay between sound and image illuminates not only her artistry, but also the pressures of balancing multiple identities: a woman in academia, the daughter of West African immigrants, and an artist finding her place in 21st-century America. Grounded in Philadelphia and New York, Enongo becomes a meditation on resilience and imagination, tracing how one voice, through persistence and vision, carries both personal and collective stories forward.
