FRÉDÉRIC HAMBALEK | GERMANY | 2025 | 87 MIN | GERMAN, FRENCH
Coming home from school one day, 11-year-old Marielle shares that a classmate slapped her, and as a result, she now has the ability to see and hear everything her parents are doing at any given moment. Her parents, Julia (Julia Jentsch) and Tobias (Felix Kramer), are initially incredulous at this outlandish claim, but when Marielle recites intimate conversations and events verbatim, the couple must come to terms with their daughter’s uncanny new abilities. Navigating this uncomfortable, omniscient monitoring, the pair is forced to answer the question, “How would you act if you knew someone was watching you at all times?” Tobias tries to embody the commanding workplace persona he has embellished for his family, while Julia sheds her inhibitions and embraces a more carefree approach to monogamy, further fracturing the family’s tenuous home life. Director Frédéric Hambalek helms this cringingly funny spin on a family drama, deconstructing the typical tropes for a completely fresh look at familial bonds and the need for personal privacy.
