MAX WALKER-SILVERMAN | UNITED STATES | 2025 | 95 MIN | ENGLISH
Dusty is a stoic cowboy who has lost his ranch to wildfires. Along with his property, one that was rich with a long family history and brimming with nostalgia, Dusty has been left devoid of his identity. Now living in a FEMA camp trailer, Dusty is surrounded by others who have lost everything to the fires. Deeply in pain but never allowing himself to show it, Dusty begins to form connections and find community with the other residents. Among the displaced is Mila, who works hard to pull Dusty out of his isolated shell. While he starts to reconfigure his life, Dusty also reconnects with his ex-wife Ruby and their daughter Callie-Rose, who so desperately wants to be just like her cowboy dad. O’Connor delivers a masterfully restrained and deeply moving performance as Dusty, bringing forth a nuanced physicality and lived-in display of humanity. Deceptively small in scope, Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding sheds a timely light on the ramifications of this climate catastrophe and the devastating impact it has on communities. This is a film that will get under your skin, and its empathy and urgency will be difficult to shake.
