Ann Lee, often referred to by her followers as the female Christ, was a self-proclaimed prophet who founded Shakerism in the mid-1700s. After four of her children died in infancy following an arranged marriage, Ann began to believe that her hardships came from committing sins of the flesh and that our true love affair as human beings should be with God. Amassing a following of devout believers in her native England, she set across the Atlantic in search of a new land in which to preach a life of vibrant song-and-dance worship and celibacy, shaming those (including her blacksmith husband) who wished to give in to their sexual compulsions. A riveting turn from Amanda Seyfried as Mother Ann, this lush biopic boasts an incredible company of players including Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson, and Christopher Abbott as Ann’s scorned spouse. Mona Fastvold, director of The World to Come and co-writer of The Brutalist, climbs back into the director’s chair on this contemplative script by her and collaborator Brady Corbet. Shot in gorgeous 70mm film, The Testament of Ann Lee is an experience like no other. Filled with beautiful hymns and electric dance sequences, this tale examines the dualities of a female-created doctrine that became so much of the blueprint for female oppression for decades to come.
