KAOUTHER BEN HANIA | TUNISIA, FRANCE | 2025 | 90 MIN | ARABIC
Few directors have played with the blend of reality versus dramatization in the way that Kaouther Ben Hania has. And few stories are as urgent as the one of 6-year-old Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl whose desperate pleas for help over a call to an emergency center in late January 2024 got muddled in a maze of bureaucracy and attempts at government cooperation. The marriage here between filmmaker and topic creates a work that is equally horrifying and paramount. Blending actual recordings of the emergency calls with staged performances of actors re-creating the call center, The Voice of Hind Rajab is a poignant blend that uses the tools available to tell the most accurate version of the story of an innocent civilian falling victim to an oppressive military attack. What emerges is something unique, crucial, and incredibly necessary — a testament to the devastating power of real documentation underneath the necessitated artifice of cinematic storytelling. Destined for accolades this award season, Ben Hania’s film is a tribute to innocent lives lost and those who try to save them in the face of political adversity.
