The 1991 Sundance Film Festival saw the debuts of Julie Dash, Hal Hartley, and more, but two first films from celebrated auteurs signaled a new era for independent filmmaking. Richard Linklater would–for better or worse–inspire imitators to turn the camera on the idiosyncratic weirdos of their community with little regard for plot while Todd Haynes challenged what constitutes a queer film through an experimental adaptation with surreal direction and form.
