When people think about the American West, what comes to mind? Although the region is home to many large cities with skyscrapers, people often associate “the West” with cowboys roaming rugged landscapes on horseback. In her talk, Journal of Arizona History author Kara McCormack will discuss this phenomenon of the “imagined West” in an unusual place--Turkey. As an American who now teaches in Turkey, McCormack will discuss how Turks today have come to understand the American West through films, television, and a western-themed town in the Turkish countryside. Join us for this fascinating glimpse at how people in another country imagine the American West.
