Join the Arizona Historical Society and Dr. Peter Dedek for an installment of the Arizona Road Trip: Route 66 and Beyond series.
Route 66 enjoys a unique place in American popular culture. Unlike most other pre-interstate U.S. highways, it has earned a distinct and widespread popular identity, in part, because historic U.S. 66 has always been associated with the deserts, Spanish explorers, Indians, and cowboys of the Southwest and with the millions of vacationers who took to the highway in their automobiles and found adventure on the open road from the 1930s to the 1970s when interstate highways replaced Route 66. This lecture examines the many historical and cultural meanings of Route 66 addressing the question: why is Route 66 so beloved and so famous?
